Week Eighteen - Props re-distribution

An insight into a small portion of the props used (and some which never featured):

Week Seventeen

This week I have been editing the footage of my music video from both shoots. However, disaster struck mid-week, when my music video on premiere pro cs4...crashed. The footage is fine, however the editing file is refusing to work properly on my laptop. Files do not render properly and it seems to reject the music video footage from the second shoot. I have therefore vacated from cs4 to using a desktop pc which has cs5, to edit my music video. This is a hindrance, but I am grateful I have lost no work and able to continue with the editing of the music video.
Notice the red and yellow bars across the timeline above. The video is refusing to render properly and has thus forced me to migrate to another work station.

Week Sixteen - Reshooting Week

Above is a funny moment during filming.
This week I re-shot the picnic scene and the very beginning of my music video. As one of my 'nymphs', Fiona, had to take off early during the main shoot, I called her back to do some additional shots with her. Sunday's shoot was far more relaxed and worked in a much more efficient way. This was probably due to the fact there were less people and therefore less noise and distractions. It was also due to the fact that I was more accustomed to my equipment and better at directing people, I also brought my shooting folder with me, along with the storyboards so that I could refer back to them as I shot. Luckily the weather remained dry like the first night, however it was very foggy. We used this to our advantage though, as the fog proved dramatically very effective for the digipak photo-shoot I held before it got dark enough to resume filming my music video. Since the 22nd of October (the main shoot), my uncle has had many of the trees cut down in the back section of the garden. The landscape has drastically changed, however, due to good lighting techniques and camera focus, there shouldn't be too many destructive continuity errors.

Shot List for the Reshoot

The necessary scenes or additional footage to be shot on Sunday's reshoot of 'Cults' 'Oh My God''. I shall be bringing this document with me on set, so I can eliminate the completed tasks as I shoot them.

The Reshoot is Scheduled

Last time, for my main shoot I created a event and invited my actors and crew via facebook onto it. This time however, I have created a 'group page'. The members of this group are everyone involved with the main shoot and is a more direct and easier way of communicating with them, rather than also telling others who may have been invited but could not make it, about the upcoming reshoot and its details. The group is a good way for me to communicate details of the shoot and also a method for my cast and crew to contact me about any of their problems or changes. I have scheduled a reshoot for the 20th of November, which is a Sunday. I recalling around half of the cast from the main shoot, though the same crew will be present.

Week Fifteen

This week I have begun to not only review the footage from the main shoot, but also to edit it using premiere pro cs4. I have so far created the ending 50 seconds of the video and various other sequences throughout the video. I had to have the footage from the camera (mov files), translated into wmv files which are compatible for editing on premiere pro cs4. The process was lengthy, but necessary and the footage quality has been reduced ever so slightly.

Week Fourteen - Shooting Week

This week, I have at last, shot my music video (22nd October). The evening went well, though the shoot was more challenging than expected. The camera was difficult to get used to, with the manual aperture lens, though I think the footage that was filmed was successful on the whole. The cast and crew were all very helpful and enthusiastic and not only did we manage to shoot the majority of the video, we all managed to enjoy ourselves too. The equipment failed us at certain points, the canon 550d battery ran out despite having charged all weekend, thus we were hindered from shooting for around half an hour to 45mins. The memory space on the camera was also full up by the end, but luckily we had filmed everything we could and would need that night. The schedule was also quite difficult to keep to, with added pressures from people needing to leave early and at different times. I also received a shock in the morning when the leading actress playing 'Alice' informed me she did not think she could make it! Luckily though she managed to avert her plans and the situation was fine. The location was good, with the garden becoming an ideal setting for the video. Though my uncle's house was empty (as nobody has moved in yet), it was still accommodating and warm. My uncle and my parents were in and out throughout the shoot and helped to keep people warm and fed - the temperature got very low as it got later into the night. The shoot was so large in sale that though everyone had left between 10.30-11, we still had to remain to clear up close till 1am. I shall also be arranging a reshoot, though it is difficult to do so as not everyone will be free on the same dates and I am uncertain as to who is needed again as I need to review the footage.

Here is a video presentation of some photos from the evening, taken by the principal photographer Natalie. The music will be the music used in the video, thus will give some inclination of what the actual product might be like:

Week Thirteen

This week I have been working to enhance my knowledge of my target audience and the collation of audience feedback on my idea for the music video. I also completed my storyboard this week, it totalled to a number of 7 A4 pages of drawn sketches of nearly 50 boxes. Using my blackberry, I took pictures of these pages and saved them to my computer. Then, on photoshop, each box was separated and saved as a jpeg. These were then dropped into Premiere Pro CS5 where they were put alongside the music on a timeline (my animatic).
Using social networking as a means to gather feedback, I used facebook's chat facility to ask members of my target audience (nearly all fans of indie music, aged 16 and upwards and frequent users of web2.0), I managed to send my proposal to them and see their reaction and response. Many also gave tips on how to avoid problems I might experience during the shoot.
I created a survey on this blog a few weeks ago. The results have been very helpful and I have collected the data and made pie-charts for them in a presentation which I have uploaded. The survey regarded the audience age, opinions on music video and digipak styles. I will use what I learned for the production of both.

Week Twelve

This week I completed a screen test and audition of an actor who is to be in my music video:

As well as this, I carried on with my storyboard which has reached 30 boxes thus far. My proposal has now been written, in which I discuss the technologies I will be using to aid me, some audience research I have carried out to find out my target audience and the idea and inspirations in general.

Thursday 6 October 2011

The Proposal and Goodwin's theory

The concept of my coursework piece is based on the narrative form of music videos. It will be performed to Cults ‘Oh My God’. My target audience will typically be both male and female genders in the 16-30 age range. From interviewing several female individuals I have ascertained that many females do not like both the sound and the idea of a female lead! Due to the fact my song features a female lead; the target audience may therefore be slightly more swayed towards men.
The video will be shot entirely at night in my uncle’s garden, which will be lit by a bright filming spotlight, with three extension leads to the house. There will be 13 actors – one of which is the lead protagonist, and three crew members including myself. Costumes will range from the personal dresses and items of the actors helping out, as well as things I have bought and borrowed items from my neighbour and theatre group. The camera will be a Canon 550D, chosen for its high quality motion-capturing, lighting gadgetry and the aperture lens which enhances the look and style of the colours and overall image. Once the footage has been transferred into a usable format such as vlr or wmv, I shall commence editing via Adobe Photshop Premiere Pro.
The narrative follows the lead protagonist as she ventures out from the security of her home during the night, to find herself being watched by a boy in a rabbit costume, an allusion to Carol’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. After showing her his pocket watch (the referencing of being ‘late for an important date’), the rabbit dashes off into the further recesses of the garden, where it is dark and overgrown. The protagonist follows and is caught up in what appears some kind of masked ball/celebration, a mixture of nymphs, masked individuals, animal faces and ‘Wonderland’ allusions. At first wary, the protagonist is led to the picnic, where she spends a lengthy amount of time, before being engaging in a night of revelling and dancing in the dark. In the end, the protagonist has transformed from her simple white night dress, to a nymph-like frock. She has joined them.
Goodwin’s theory:
Links between lyrics and visual – no real explicit link, i.e. ‘I’ll leave you to stay inside dreaming’ is not entirely relevant to the music video plot, however it does focus on the theme of going outside and venturing out, breaking with norms – a heavy theme in the piece. Another link would be the fat the action plays along with the music – during climatic moments in the music; the events may also reach a pinnacle. This is what is known as working in a complimentary way.
There will be motifs seen in this genre of music video. These include, ambiguity, innocence into some kind of hardening or strengthening or even a darkening.
Intertextual reference to Lewis Carol’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as well as other music videos I have cited in my blog previously.
Notions of looking will feature heavily, albeit in a much less sexualised manner. There will be a focus on the leads innocence, she first appears in a white night dress and untainted by maquillage. By the end, she will have gained a nymph outfit, a shorter cut dress, flowers and face paint. As the central focus, there will be much camera focus on her, she is being watched completely throughout. This links in with the theme of Voyeurism and a constant figure of attention. All the characters will be fascinated by her and she will seem oblivious to the camera’s presence save for a few dramatic exceptions.
There will be no demands on the record label as such as the artist is not being represented in the video.

Masks

Indie folk band; Boy and Bear's 'Rabbit Song' is an influential music video for me. It carries many of the themes I hope to achieve in my music video; escapism, mystery, the supernatural or fairytale and nostalgia of a gothic/pre-raphaelite, natural world. The video is shot using HD cameras which are lit to convey the natural surroundings as a form of paradise, with light pooling through the gaps between leaves. The costumes used also provide me with ideas and the band (after watching their other videos) appear to have a distinct 'mask' theme, implying obscurity and ambiguity - elements which I aim to borrow. Most importantly, the video is non-performance based (much like Chad Valley's 'Shell Suite' video) and involves the idea of a central character being led off into a world of masked outsiders.

Week 11

This week I took a photo using the Canon 550D which I plan to shoot my video and my digipak material with. Though the photos were heavily over-exposed (as demonstrated in a post below), the experience was a valuable lesson on how to use the camera and experiment with the aperture lense.
As well as this, I have embarked on a trip to all local charity stores and pound stores, party shops and the like, on a quest to find props for my music video. I have also invested in makeup and paints for the female actresses in my shoot.

Test Shot

Here is a depth of field shot I took with a Canon 550D which I will be using to film my music video. As this technique will be required for close up shots it was important for me to learn how to achiee a high focus foreground with a blurry background.

Week Nine

This week I have created a facebook event for my music video shoot, inviting all the guests (both cast and crew) with details of what will happen. Luckily my call to arms was met with a reasonably speedy response.
As well as this I have drawn sketches for my digipak cover and have started storyboarding in a proper and 'official' method.

Digipack Rough Sketches

Posted by Picasa

Here are initial designs for the front cover of my digipack. I have decided to venture down the 'photographic' route and will edit through Adobe Photoshop. These designs show masked figures in the outdoors, standing against a depth of field with green branches in the foreground. There is also a design for an alternative cover which depicts a lone scarecrow standing in a field - though I prefer the animal-masked-figure designs.

Shot Description for 23 Second Intro

23 seconds of intro music before vocals:
Silence introduces the audience, a bird’s eye view shot of a girl sleeping on the grass, and wind tassels her hair. It is night-time, but she is made visible through camera lighting. At the first ‘beat’ of the opening moments of the song, the girl’s eyelids snap open.
The first shot will include the girl from head to mid-torso. Her brown hair is sprawled out fluidly and her eyes are wide open in contrast with her previous tranquillity.
A medium shot from the side shows her begin to sit up and is completed by a frontal medium shot of her fully seated upright.
Her facial expression is one of wonderment – how did she get there? A flashing white light from her left causes her to turn her head towards the disturbance.
A side shot reveals her seated position on the grass – about 3 metres away a masked figure stands watching her. The figure is short, dressed in a white shirt and brown shorts and wears a rabbit mask. It holds a clock or a large watch under its arm/in his hand.
A close up shows the audience the girls startled face. Intercut of medium shots of the rabbit, standing motionless and watching her.
A long shot from the side of her shows the girl stand up to face the rabbit properly. The rabbit watches silently for a second or two, then whips round and dashes off to the end of the garden.

As the girl makes after the rabbit, the vocals begin.

Social Media to promote music video

I have utilised Facebook's 'event' facility to promote my music video via social media. I have created an event, accompanied with a description of my music video, what I aim to achieve and details such as location and times to arrive. As evidence of this I have taken a screenshot of the event. I have posted a few updates below in the comments section to keep my 'models' and 'crew' up-to-date.

Sunday 28 August 2011

Week Eight

This week I have used camera and shooting equipment to produce a series of test shots in practice for my video. I attempted to use a large variety of angles and movements to explore various techniques I could apply to my coursework piece. The sequences consisted of simple, physical, non-dialogue scenarios which could be manipulated later in Adobe Premiere Pro. I filmed the footage using a HD camera and a tripod - which was needed to provide a smooth and professional quality. After the footage had been filmed, I loaded them into the editing software and changed time settings and reverse speeds to produce different effects. I also achieved a split-screen.
I have also discovered the 2009 Smirnoff 'Be There' ad campaign which is very similar to the idea of my music video. In particular, the video's costumes, lighting and location provided me with fresh ideas for my own piece. I would like to combine the idea of these masked individuals, revelling in the woods, with the idea of an 'Alice' like figure, being drawn into their gathering and becoming one with them.

Wednesday 24 August 2011

Smirnoff 'Be There' ad. This is highly inspirational in terms of the creation of my music video. Though the costumes, location and props seem very difficult to achieve, I hope to emulate this quirky and slightly creepy ambiance.

Friday 12 August 2011

Test Sequences

The shooting of these test sequences has enabled me to gain first-hand experience in handling digital cameras and tripods - equipment I intend to use in my music video. I have also been able to test Adobe CS3 as the editing software I will apply to my music video in post-production. The test has also permitted me to experience choosing the angle and depth of shots.

Reverse Storyboard

I have created a reverse storyboard which allows me to view a variety of camera angles and shots for a performance based music video. This will enable me to generate ideas for my own video, when thinking about how to shoot individuals and perhaps live performances. Close up shots appear to be the most effective way of shooting instruments as the lack of distance manages to draw audiences closer and feel more integral to the action.

Sunday 7 August 2011

Week Seven

This week I have completed a reverse storyboard of the music video 'We Were Children' by Tribes. I decided to choose this video as it is purely performance based and thus relied heavily on camera angles which would portray the live performance as dramatic as possible. Though I intend to shoot a narrative-based music video, I intend for there to be C.U shots of the occasional percussion instrument.
I have also begun to design my digipack covers and brainstormed possible ideas through sketches. Though ideas are yet to be solidified, it is evident I am aiming for the front image to bear heavily towards an almost Pre-Raphaelite, pseudo-Gothic and surreal theme, with a focus on the outdoors and the night.

Song for the Music Video

Cults - Oh My God is the current song choice for my music video. The female, fragile-sounding voice will work well with the events which occur in the garden. The song has an ethereal quality which works well with the unnatural theme of the music video.
The lyrics also mention venturing outside which would suit the outdoor shoot and the 'Alice in Wonderland' feel of the music video.

Sunday 31 July 2011

Week Six

This is the diary entry for holiday work. I have embarked on a location recce. This involved taking photos of an area I intend to shoot my music video in. I was happy with how this went and it was very much a chance-scouting that I found the garden where I could envisage the idea of my music video occurring. Seeing the new location also changed my idea. Rather than set it in the woods - which would've been far more difficult to shoot in, I later found the garden would not only be more of a wiser location, practically, but also worked better with the 'narrative' of the video.
I have decided on the music I want for my video - 'Oh my god' by Cults. This is because it suits the mystical and slightly unsettling approach I desired.
The actual idea for my music video is ever evolving. Earlier in the holidays, I was on the brink of scrapping my current idea and going for a much more surreal and dramatic video. In the end, I decided the video was better suited as slightly more simplistic and less avante garde.
I began some sketches for the designs of costumes and have begun scouting cast members.

Location Recce

Posted by Picasa

Above are the results from my location recce. The majority of my music video will take place in the back section of the garden which has been photographed. The twisted trees, river with it's rickety bridge, the witche's-hut-like shed will all add to the atmosphere. It would be possible to add to the greenery and create an even more creepier and unsettling feel during production.
I may decide to include interior shots, though the important aspect of my music video will be the events which occur chiefly around the shed and the open (and hidden) space behind it, near the river.

10 Iconic Music Video Stills

Above is a slideshare presentation of 10 iconic stills from various music videos which have gained notoriety. The shots can be deemed 'iconic' due to the fact they have influenced other music videos and have resulted in imitations and parodies and are recognisable across the globe.

The collection of stills is useful in the creation of ideas for my own music video. I could borrow from the lighting effects from some of the stills - in particular those that emphasize the artist through contrasts of light and dark. I could even simply, reference an iconic still directly in my music video as a nostalgic nod.

Week Five

I have so far analysed the lyrics of two songs and presented by thoughts on each via different online formats. I have also added some other music videos to my inspirations page. Lyric Analysis - Sprawl ii by Arcade Fire

A Prezi document analysing the lyrics of Arcade Fire's song 'Sprawl ii'. This song was a possible candidate to be used in my music video but in the end I decided on a lighter, more fairy-sounding song. I liked Sprawl ii for the female singers lilting voice and lyrics which conveyed themes of escapism, however they did so in a more abstract way whereas Cults' 'Oh My God' was more simplistic.

A presentation describing the possible camera and filming equipment that is accessible to me for my shoot for my music video.

Week Four

This week I have collected photos of the equipment I could possibly use in my music video. Seeing what was there on offer, it helepd to inspire further ideas for a possible music video. Though I have several ideas - one of which was the route I was aiming for, having seen the equipment, I am considering changing my idea again.
Currently I am developing an idea themed in an Alice in Wonderland way, and am playign with the idea of having a night exterior shoot or possibly a day shoot. I realise when I come to shoot the video, it will be colder and darker.
I have also created a reverse storyboard which consists of screen-shots of Tribe's 'We Were Children Video', with discussion on its camera movement, editing and technique. I specifically chose this video as it makes good use of instruments and performance as well as a range of cameras showing a variety of perspectives and angles.

The music video ‘The Universal’ by Blur follows a narrative set chiefly in what appears to be a futuristic bar fashioned to the style (with its padded, white-washed walls) of a mental asylum or hospitalised environment. This conflicts with the conventions of a normal bar, where the décor usually emulates revelling, relaxation and glitz, rather than surgical cleanliness and austerity seen here. The narrative is somewhat ambiguous as there is no clear story-line however it reaches a crescendo at the end, with a series of subtitled silent monologues growing progressively more obscene.
The video makes blatant references to the work of Stanley Kubrick – in particular, his film ‘A Clockwork Orange.’ The front-man Damon Albarn has taken on the role of the psychotic  anti-hero Alex DeLarge, with his eerie demeanour and costume. He breaks the fourth wall with the audience by directly winking at them and fixing them with manic, bestial grins – suggestive of his dominating force in the video. Kubrick’s work is also referenced with the golf-ball-like mass which appears before a group of people who stare at it transfixed – yet nonplussed by the floating mass. This echoes the film 2001: A Space Odyssey when the black pillar appears before a group of apes, who seem to revere it.
The unusual, warped pop-art style imagery is intercut with the events of the video as well as shots of the band performing on stage in the bar environment. They form together as a satirical stab at modern society. A woman is seen wallowing in the company of her male colleagues who fawn over her as though she were a piece of meat. In her hands she holds sheet music – another reference to the opening sequence of A Clockwork Orange when a woman sits with her colleagues in the milk bar singing to Beethoven. The woman allows herself to become a sex object before their eyes, flirting along with them and adopting a seductive body language. A priest is seen drinking what appears to be some kind of alcoholic beverage and growing steadily drunker with his companion. This conflicts with his role as a religious figure. He also (in the climax of the video) appears to tell his drinking partner something shocking and heinous and his laughter is abruptly replaced with a look of despair. All the conversations in the video are silent adding to their ambiguity. This is also seen in the conversation between the man in a tuxedo and the ‘red man’ who have a surreal and nonsensical conversation which is subtitled. Other characters we see are a pair of twins who wear strange glasses which hinder rather than improve their site.
The theme of voyeurism is again enhanced by the naked female mannequins used as decoration in the bar. Also, a man simultaneously kisses and touches two women furiously. The image is grotesque, with the female’s lipstick staining the male’s cheeks and the fact they are in traditional Chinese women’s dress, a subversion of its symbol of purity and decency. Females contrast greatly to the white-washed environment. Most wear some kind of red (clothes or makeup). This allows them to stand out and be seen images of sexual pleasure.
More references to Orwell’s 1984 are given through the gathering crowds who listen to the events in the bar via the golf-ball like masses with the speaker and camera. The crowd appear devoid of emotion, reminiscent of the passionless Inner and Outer Party members of Oceania.
The use of Warhol-like art is in keeping with the racy and surreal theme and the orange background the unusual drawings are set against is a reference to ‘A Clockwork Orange’.
The slummy council estate environment of the emotionless people outside the bar is representative of a dystopian future. This fits in with the perverse goings-on in the futuristic-styled bar and the song lyrics themselves which sing of the future; ‘this is the next century....’
There could be implications of anti-religion, through the use of the drunk priest and an image of an embryo falling into a cocktail glass. This could be a representation of the Catholic Church’s stand against abortion or perhaps could suggest that human life is not valued in modern society.

Research of Music Videos

Purpose
The purpose of a music video is to establish a visual representation of an artist or band, providing an audience with a first impression of them and to existing fans, to fulfil expectations. In short, music videos are a form of promotion to extend the popularity of the artist. Music videos are also made to entertain their audience. By the 1980s, music videos were essential to the promotion of singles.
Development
Pioneering bands in the 60’s such as The Who, The Kinks and the Rolling Stones would film their performances in videos known as ‘promos’ which was an early form of a music video. In Britain, Top of the Pops would not only feature live performances but also the promos of current bands and performers.
The close relationship between music tracks and visual material can be traced back to at least forty years earlier with the experiments of Oscar Fischinger in Germany in the 1920s and in the USA in the 1930s after he fled the Nazis, notably his work on the Disney film, ‘Fantasia’ (1939).
Short films of anything up to eight minutes in duration were used to display the talents of singers mainly as reels on the forerunner of the video jukebox, the Panarom.
The late 60s saw an increase in music films, e.g. Elvis Presley’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’.
In the 80s, expansion of the usage of television meant the rise of MTV, a music channel which oversaw the broadcasting of music videos and held its own version of the Oscars called the Video Music Awards.
In the digital age and the opening up of online promotion, performers have made their music even more accessible not only from downloads but from streaming of music and music videos on sites like YouTube.
New Tech
Panaroms were visual jukeboxes which would show 16mm short films on a reel. The production standards of music videos have increased massively since their promo format. They are now much costlier; involve CGI effects and green screen technology. The filming equipment is now more enhanced and can be shot in High Definition. Today, music videos can be reached via terrestrial channels and through the web. Some musicians have even pioneered combining music videos with online applications, such as google earth which collaborated with Arcade Fire to create a video which showed its audience member satellite images of their local town.

Week One

As preparation for my coursework I have come up with a brief, which compiles my main objectives which I aim to achieve. Also, I have begun to brainstorm ideas for possible music videos. As I am interested in making a music video with a narrative, not dissimilar to a short film. Therefore, I have also been watching short films on BBC iPlayer, which the BBC has specially commissioned as a series.
I have drawn brief designs of three characters I intend or am interested in using in my music video. I have also made a resource audit which I have uploaded to this blog as a Prezi. The resource audit provides the personnel and equipment, places and props that I can use for my production.I have also thought about possible song choices.

Project Brief - Promotion package of an album

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
· a website homepage for the band;
· a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
· a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

I have chosen this production task as I think it will be both challenging and exciting as it makes use of creative skills and elements of performance and directing.
I think the areas which I will find challenging is documentation through maintaining the blog as I am not familiar with the blogosphere but look forward to enhancing my knoledge of the online world. I will also find the logistical side a challenge when it comes to shooting my music video, as well as the technicalities of filming.
